Get out of your rut
If you're a creative and you know it, raise your hand.
If you raised your hand, then there's a 10 out of 10 chance that you've experienced writer's block, lacked inspiration, or was just in a rut in whatever form of creativity you part take in. This applies especially if you take it seriously/make a living from it as opposed to creating as a hobby. Not experiencing a creative rut means that you're probably not producing original content, or you're not putting your all into whatever you do.
Sorry, not sorry.
I recently came across the War of Art by Steven Pressfield which is all about creating the best mental/emotional state for creatives, entrepreneurs, and 'doers' of the world to create without dealing with what Pressfield calls 'Resistance'.
What is Resistance?
Resistance is what holds us back from doing what we should be doing. Disregard 'what we should be doing' as doing laundry, doing chores, and mundane tasks. Although you should do those things routinely, Resistance applies to what you were put on Earth to do. Your gift. Your talent. Your outlet of creative expression. That business you want to start. That book you want to write. That dream of traveling the world and being wealthy that you want to live.
Instead of taking the small steps towards achieving what we want, Resistance pulls us away from pursuing our calling through distractions that come in several forms. Have you ever thought "My schedule is full today, so I'll spend most of tomorrow writing"? That's Resistance. Have you ever been pursuing a dream, then the perfect relationship comes along forcing you to put your dreams on hold? That's resistance.
There's war in art
Any thought, action, or occurrence that indirectly persuades you to not sit down and work on your craft is Resistance. As Pressfield says, the hardest part about writing is actually sitting down and starting.
Though this is just a general overview, these are the key principles I found to be useful in my life after reading the War of Art. Procrastination and distraction are mental, emotional and spiritual battles that have to be overcome every day to live out our calling. It only took two minutes for me to apply the principles from this book in my life to become a better blogger and curate more content for you guys. Order the book here and let me know what you guys think.
